Hello everyone. Just a note to bring to everyone's attention, there is a public meeting today from 1-5pm regarding docking issues. I apologize for the late notice; however, we were only able to confirm the meeting this morning. This meeting is being held at the DNR Office in Columbia City at the following address: 1353 S Governor's Drive, Columbia City, Indiana. One item on the agenda will be as I understand it, pier placement, and as many know, this is a growing issue. I can be reached at 260-243-0300 if anyone has any questions.
Welcome back to the lake! My name is Alivia and I'll be watering flowers again this summer. If you remember me from the previous years and you want me to help while you are away from the lake give me a call. Please call me at 495-9906.
Have a great summer!

IT HAS BEEN SEVERAL YEARS SINCE CLEAR LAKE HAS HAD A PARADE AND IT'S TIME TO BRING IT
BACK.
THE PARADE IS SPONSORED BY THE CLEAR LAKE ASSOCIATION.
My "green thumb" got a little out of hand and I have loads of extra plants to share. Will have a "Plant Sale" on Saturday, May 24, from 8:00 to 3:00 at 1048 Lake Drive. Herbs, hanging baskets, fountain grass, annuals, raspberries, vegetables, tulip and redbud trees, and much more. Prices are VERY reasonable. Look forward to sharing some floral beauty.
Anyone looking to purchase a water slide for your kids or grandkids? Stop by 708 Lake Dr. and take a look. Very sturdy and fun for kids. $90
Free to good homes... we have a selection of small hardwood trees (nice varieties of Oak and others) available for planting on your property. Because the trees are small (12"-18") they are easy to plant, but to be successful they need to be planted in the next week. If you are interested, or for more information, call Patty Griest 495-3734 or stop by cottage 898 (check for Patty in the field
across the street.)
I have a SeeDoo for sale....2003 GTX 4 TEC Supercharged with Shorelander Trailer...very low hrs...was rode last year one time...excellent condition...call Kip at 773-447-9997 for price
Am looking for a tennis racket-just kidding!
I AM looking for a used Sunfish Sailboat to buy. If anyone has one for sale, please call 495-9374.
I have a jet ski for sale. It is a 98 SeaDoxx GSX with trailer. The motor was rebuilt so it is in great condition. Please call me for more details 260-602-3973.
I agree with your thoughts of Community Service being ordered for these boys to clean the Public Beach and other areas around Clear Lake. I have it cleared with 3 of the parents so far to have their child present at the June 9th Town Council meeting to apologize to the citizens of Clear Lake for the crimes
committed against them. If the fourth parent refuses, I will ask Probation (my wife works there) to have it ordered. I appreciate your comments and I will keep you posted on this bulletin board in the future.
I turned all of my paperwork over to Probation for the court process to begin on these four boys. There was a total of 16 cases in and around Clear Lake. Two of the boys face charges in all 16 incidents and the other two were out for some but not others. I am expecting to file more charges later since I have 3 grocery sacks full of property and some of it came from crimes that have not been reported yet.
First--thanks for the info on Katmandu. Our food was great, service, too. But the table next to us had a different waitress. And both couples had less than stellar service. we would give this restaurant a 7.5 out of 10 stars. Re the public beach--one table is in the water and one on the beach is broken. Too bad visitors do not take better care of this facility. One last item--do we have any codes concerning trash and/or appearance/condition of buildings in the town?
Thanks also from the Kummers Deputy Gonya. Being year round residents we appreciate being kept informed on this matter. Wouldn't it be nice is they were sentenced to keeping the Public Beach mowed and clean all summer.
I too would like to thank John Gonya for the great police work. And more important the fact that he kept us informed about the problem. Thanks John
John,
Congrats, on great police work.

I have a pair of metal hanging planters (green over black) that take fiber liners. Bought them at Baker's 4 years ago. With the condos facelift I will not be allowed to hang them
again (BOOHOO), but it makes sense not to in any way deface our new exterior.
Over the MANY years I have lived at Clear Lake I have put useable items curb side.
48 hours is the max time before they're gone. Somehow I don't think hanging planters would be their bag. BOTTOM LINE: if you want them - call me - 495-9603. I want them to have a good home!

Good news! On Wednesday, I was able to track down and obtain confessions out of 3 of the 4 kids involved in the thefts around the lake. I have some property recovered and I expect to get more. The fourth kid will be interviewed on Thursday and I expect the same from him. I still suggest keeping things locked up because unfortunately, times have changed. Maybe someday we will get back to the point that we can feel safe leaving a door unlocked..

Nedine.. A bunch of us ate at Timbuktu the Thursday after they opened. The food was good... service was a little disjointed, but the waitress was nice and kind.... I think it will be better given a little time. I was pleased to see perch and mussels on the menu... The mussels were good by the way.. Not tough and I got plenty of them. Give it a try. I think they are open for lunch as well. Ann

On Saturday night and again on Monday night, several vehicles were gone through in the 500 and 600 block of Lake drive and a few on Outer drive. There was even a few garage's entered in order to gain entry to the vehicles. Only small things were taken from the vehicles at each residence. Please, keep your vehicles locked and garage doors locked. I believe the suspect(s) are younger and only seem to be interested in change, cell phones, and anything small they can get their hands on. I hope to catch them in the near future but until I can, please leave things locked up and report anyone you see walking that you don't recognize, especially at night. Call 911 if you see someone out during the late night hours or call 495-9620 to reach me. Thanks, John Gonya

Bill, We do not see the cormorants this morning, so maybe they are on their way to their summer feeding grounds. Lake Champlain between New York & Vermont have a lot of them. When we told Todd about them two years ago, he said they are not good to have take up residence. WE have not seen the eagle for several weeks at the island, but we have seen her while we were back in the vineyard, soaring on up currants, just because she can. Speaking of vineyard, anybody wishing to enjoy the beautiful sunshine get a little exercise and fresh air after being cooped up all winter, we will be digging holes for another 450 vines between now and the end of next week. Come join us. It is lots of fun.

For those who slept through it, we had an earthquake rumble through the area last night. I was awakened to our bed shaking (don't get any ideas here) and thought it was Karen stirring next to me, but she was lying still there. Then I thought it was our dog, Chance, with her back against our bed and that she might be scratching or something. Nope. That wasn't it either. I got up and found Chance outside our doorway wide awake and looking around. Didn't think much of it until I turned on the radio this morning. Apparently, last night, there was a 5.3 earthquake over in Illinois. People were calling in from all around talking about it. People as far up as Coldwater Michigan felt it. Here's to a shakin' quakin' spring at Clear Lake! :)

It looks like a small pistol but it fires a M-80 to explode at a distance of up to 250 feet from the firing point, and I promise you there won't be any Cormorants on the Island anymore. I'll be up this weekend and take care of it, with no harm to the creatures. But you might hear a loud boom or two or three and a pretty good echo depending on the wind.

For anyone with a "Boomer" gun, you might want to go to the island and scare the Cormorants away. We saw them fly in on Monday night, although they may have been here a couple days earlier. There were probably about 50 of them. We
definitely do not want to have them take up residence at Clear Lake. They eat fish and defoliate the trees from their droppings.

Hi to all members of the Yacht Club.
TGIFs are starting again May 23. This year there is a host and a committee they select to provide the food each Friday. Check the Windward for the schedule.
TGIFs are for Yacht Club members and their immediate family. If you wish to include guests, contact the host for that evening. Some events will require reservations. Those should be made with the host for that party. Attendees do not need to bring food unless requested by a host. If you need further information or
want to offer help, call Sandy Ayres 495-2198. See you there !!

Ann,
We have an old paddleboat for sale. It is a yellow/white one leaned up against my gray minibarn out by the road (on causeway between Round/Clear) if you want to go have a look. The hull seems to be sound, though my kids claim it leaks somewhere (maybe the crank seal or rudder?). I suspect it's really from piling 4-5 teenagers onto it until it's nearly underwater ;-) I can be reached at home 260-459-1468 or may be up this weekend to roll the docks in.

For those just heading to CL to open for the summer, lots of limbs and branches down from the heavy snows all winter. Also, the rabbits and deer have been lunching on the shrubs--some almost bare. Does anyone know if road repair is on the agenda for this summer? Many potholes and hazards on Lake Drive which need attention. Do we have a maximum load limit? All, as Kay just said, ice was re-made last night but very thin and the lake is making the exact opposite pitch sounds of initial freezing groans. I thought the air force was doing
maneuvers high above us! A high pitch that I have never heard in all these years! Did see the mature eagle yesterday accompanied by an immature one buzzing the open water near us. If you drive around the lake you can see the internal "rivers" of drainage across the lake as it opens up.

About the ice, since 1950 when my parents bought cottage 222, our well house that sits down at waters edge, has been taken out at least 4 times by the ice going off the lake. The first time in the mid 50s it took the wood foundation completely out from under the well house. It was rebuilt on a cement foundation and that has been taken out at least 3 times since. Last time we rebuilt it was in 2002. The original structure was built in the 1880s, and for the most part everything currently in the well house is original wood, Held together with a few pieces of new materials and lots of glue and screws. The power of moving ice is amazing. Every year when the ice starts to move, I hope the wind is not into our shore, and that our historic "Well House" will survive another year. Bruce Spangler,

Thanks John (Barrett) for jogging my memory about the Yost pier incident. As I recall, there was much "friendly wagering" back then amongst the local gentry about just how long the pier would last before the ice "got it". What was it? Not more than 4-5 seasons, as I recall. But it was an amazing pier. Being young & stupid in those days, I couldn't resist the urge to try out the pre-stressed concrete diving board that was part of the pier. So, one evening late, after sufficient intake of liquid refreshments, I hustled myself over there via boat, snuck onto the pier, and with a mighty leap, launched myself off the diving board, doing a humongous "cannonball". It's a shame no one was there to record this incident for posterity. The resulting splash and shock wave must have been something
wondrous to behold. Needless, to say, my considerable mass didn't even begin to phase the diving board. Ah, those were the good 'ole days!

John Rehm. John, your note about the ice "piling up" was interesting. My wife and I were on the south shore a few years back and we remember the ice being about 18" to 24" thick and it had pushed up on the sea wall where we were at, about 8 to 10' high. Truly amazing when you think about it. Also, along our seawall, we had ice just recently that pushed up on the seawall about 5' high. You may or may not remember the "concrete pier" off of
Yost's point for us old timers. This is where Aeschliman's live now. The power of ice is amazing. This concrete pier was demolished by the ice and subsequently had to be removed. There is a rather large "divet" where the pier use to be. FYI.

I need another day to make my guess for total ice off day though. I think Tom Eckrich has a pretty good shot with March 29th but I still think it might be a bit earlier or maybe I just hope its earlier.

Bill, yes the pictures of the ice going off were from last March. March 24th to be exact, and unless the weather really warms up fast I think it will still be around this year on the 24th. The collection is a mixture of pictures from the last three winters.

Mark Jones,
Unfortunately the last photo, of the ice leaving Clear Lake, I believe was last March. There is still plenty of ice on the lake as of 3/11/2008. Anywhere from 12"-17" in fact.
Anyone care to take an early guess for a total ice off contest????? My son William won the fame and fortune last year. Who will win this year!!

Hello, Barb... Fran & I are so sorry to hear about Bob's difficulties! He's been such a good neighbor ever since we first came to CL in the mid 1960's. For sure, we'll get a card off to him ASAP. Please keep this BB updated on his progress. Bob's a tough 'ole bird & will do what is necessary to get himself "back up to snuff"!

Hi Barb,
FYI, I just called and talked to Bob. As many of you may or may not know, Bob is my brother-in-law. We only talked for a few minutes as he sounded pretty groggy from pain the killer. He said he was shoveling snow when he fell and he said that the arm broke completely away from the shoulder. Didn't sound very good.
He very much appreciated the call so others may want to call as well. 260-665-1163. What I can't figure out is, at Bob's age, why is he out shoveling snow?
Anyway, a card or a call I am sure he would appreciate. Alan Eckert

I'm sure many of you know Bob Hine (486 Lake Dr.). He fell about 10 days ago and badly shattered his upper arm (I don't know if left or right) - had surgery in FWA and is now at Northern Lakes Rehab Center, 516 N, Williams, Angola, In 46703. It will be quite a while before he recovers. He has always cared about the Lake and everyone on it. I'm sure he would love a card from any or all of you. Bob talks a lots - listens a little (when his hearing aid is working) - BUT is the greatest booster and advocate for Clear Lake that I know. Let him know you care. thanks

After reading some of earlier posts re things musical and noting that Rick Eckert lurks around this board, I thought I'd bring a little levity to the group by relating a little "inside" musical humor that has been making the rounds recently. As the story goes, seems like two jazz sidemen from NYC got hired to play a big gig in Chicago. As they had conflicting commitments, they had to drive individually rather than go together. The sax man got to the job site, but his buddy, the trumpet player, wasn't there, so he asked where he was. He was told that he accidentally got killed on a bridge in Indiana. The saxman stood there for a while with a perplexed look on his face, and then haltingly said, "Man, far out, there's no bridge in "Indiana"! Now if the foregoing leaves you with a perplexed look on your face, either sing through the
tune," Indiana" or ask Rick E. He'll surely be able to explain this to you. Enjoy!!!

With all of this sleet and snow I spent Monday night at my parents home and Tuesday night at Chris house. My parents found an old tax bill that my grandpa had saved from 1926. Hawk's now have a brand new cottage on that lot - 848. In 1926 the tax bill for that lot was $1.19. I wish my property tax was that today.
John, there is a rumor that Earl and Pam are living on the Indian Reservation just south of Tucson, Arizona. Pam calls her mother every day, but doesn't say where she is located.

At the risk of being judged a hermit ( if not outright "nosey") living off in a cave somewhere who knows not the state of current events, dare I ask if there have been any updates on the McNaughton saga? Does anyone know where he is? Other than the sale of his properties and antiques, have there been any other repercussions stemming from his inexplicable behavior?
PS: Fran & I had a nice visit with Jeff & Ni Gay, who stopped by for lunch and a chat on their way to Ocala to visit his brother, Phil and his wife, Anna. They are well, but seem maybe to be ready to give up the RV life as they have been looking into condos in the Ft. Meyers area.

I saw a posting about weekly rental rates at Clear Lake Cottages. We rent our place for $2000 - $2250 per week, with the rates scaled with July being the highest price. We are totally booked for July but still have June and August weeks open. I don't know the exact rates that others are charging, but my sister Ellen (cottage 498), my brother Neil (cottage 812) and cousin Jacky (cottage 1058) all rent by the week as well...and I'll be glad to pass any inquiries on to them if we cannot
accommodate a guest.
We have 4 bedrooms and two baths, and sleep 8 comfortably. Feel free to contact me at aed@djj.com or call us at (513) 561-2626 if anyone is interested in renting.

First off, "Thanks!' to Julie Z. for letting me know about this BB. Have enjoyed reading all the posts.
Sparing all of you "cold birds" any comments about how we "snowbirds" have been enjoying a remarkably warm winter here in palm tree country, I'll take this opportunity to bring up to date those of you who are aware of my situation. Have been attending PT (physical therapy or is it "pain & torture") sessions three days a week at Tampa General Hosp., a first rate facility. Have reached he point that I am now able to walk about 40-50' (using a walker) on my initial prosthetic leg. Am going in next week to begin the process of getting a second one, one that is more suitable for walking. Progress is slow, Oh, so slow, but in time, I'll get there.
Fran and I are both already starting to have spring thoughts about CL and will soon be really looking forward to the trek back north.
Keep the posts coming! Most enjoyable to learn what all is going on.

Did not get the boat out this past weekend as there was no appreciable wind to speak of. Since there was a layer of snow on the lake, you would need a good 15-20 mph wind to do any good. I still haven't given up for the year but with all the snow we received today, it doesn't look good. I think I'll have to head to Wisconsin some year and hit the big lakes.

As I look out the window of our Florida condo and watch the palm trees sway, it seems strange and foreign to think of the lake, now frozen, surrounded by bare trees and snowy roads. I can almost hear my voice echo in the cold stillness of winter. But then I switch my thoughts and anticipate the sounds and warmth of the summer lake - and I can't wait for June to arrive!
But there is an important issue that needs to be resolved before the summer fun at Clear Lake begins. And that is the matter of Officer Dick Lehman's legal hearing that will be commencing shortly. He has been accused by a few members of the town council of several charges without even being given the opportunity for a rebuttal or to state his side of the story. His job is being threatened, as well as his character. He needs our support and to know that there are people who care. Let's not let
innuendos take the place of common sense and decency. For those of you who would like to support Officer Lehman and thank him for his years of dedication and service to Clear Lake, please write a letter of encouragement and support. That's the least we can do for someone who also loves Clear Lake and has spent many years keeping it a safe and fun place to live.

There are fish under the ice on Clear Lake. So what else is new? An ice fisherman has been parking his car behind the condos for a couple of days. I saw him come back to his car late this afternoon - stuck my head out of the front door and asked him, "Catch anything?" He proudly brought over a net bag with 3 Northern (pike I presume) and each one measured 30 to 36 inches long. His comment, "I really had work to get that big one". There is a time and a season for everyone to enjoy his or her sport! What's your favorite?

Tom,
We were up Saturday late afternoon to find 2-4" of fresh snow on the lake and grass with snow covered roads also. A couple of snowmobiles were buzzing by in front of us, headed towards the condos then back by us heading towards the marina bay. Behind us on Round lake, there was also a couple of snowmobiles cruising the lake. Fisherman galore as far as we could see on Clear Lake and Round Lake (about 50 or so).
Not much activity in front of your place or mom and dads. I'm pretty sure that just completely froze over on Wednesday or Thursday. It appears safe but I'm sure its not too thick yet, maybe about 3 " or so. A
cross-country skier went by my place around 10:00 this morning though, looked like he (or she) was heading around the lake about 100 yards out. There is a warm up forecasted for Mon and Tues but then back to cold temps Weds on. I don't think this will melt too much ice, in fact it might really help smooth the ice for ice boaters come next weekend. What ice we have is very hard dark ice which is good. Hope I answered your question KRAMER. See ya.
Bill
p.s. William says hello, and promises to beat you in tennis next spring.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Christmas concert and dinner at Fremont High School. The music department made $1600. that they will use for their trip in March. It was so much fun that it may become an annual event. All of the band and choir members really appreciate your support and kind words.

Alan-
Thanks so much for the report. As I looked at the South Shore cams this morning, I could see geese/ducks out on the lake which I assumed meant open water. You would have thought with the frigid temps this past
weekend, the lake would have frozen over solid.

Joe: As I watch the sunrise I still see lots of open water. We have ice about 200 feet from the shore but then open water to within a few hundred feet of the south shore. It
appears there is ice from the East shore to about 444-448 but much of it just formed over night. The open water extends almost to the island on the west. What ice we do have appears pretty rough. We have had persistent winds from the west for several days. Ice fisher people are out on Marina bay, in front of the condos and on Round Lake. We have some snow but it has been blown around so the depth is very inconsistent, I'd guess an inch on average. Forecast is for rain on Saturday. Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to call if we can help more.

Can anyone tell me if the ice conditions on the lake are favorable for ice boating? We received a good inch of snow in Fort Wayne overnight and they said areas to the north of Angola received more. Thanks

Ice fishermen are back at it in front of the condos. These guys are nuts! Open water out further in the bay.

Chris, I'd hold off until next weekend. There was about 8" of ice at the end of December, beginning of January, but it all thawed. I was up on Wednesday eve and Round just froze over again, nice and smooth too, but the ice is very thin in most spots. With the cold temps now and into next week I'll bet by next weekend you be able to ice skate just about anywhere, as long as we don't get to much snow on top of the new ice. (this insulates the ice and it takes longer to get thicker). But with the subzero temps this weekend, you'll probably see some die-hard fisherman on Round by Sunday afternoon walking on 2" to 4" of ice. The only problem is the ice thickness won't be
consistent everywhere. I'd give it a week.
p.s. I've seen Marty Zachrich figure skating before, out in front of 496, and he is good!!! But he didn't look good in tights.

Beautiful photos of the storm. However, it was not so beautiful driving to CL from Hamilton that evening. The usual 20 minute trip was over an hour. But the next morning CL was a winter wonderland. The branches of our hemlock were so weighted with snow that they touched the ground.

To: annie skinner- welcome to where friends chat, inform one another and keep the love of Clear Lake alive. You and your husband now live in one of my very
favorite homes (formerly owned by Bill & Dorothy Kampe). I hope you enjoy it as much as they did and as much as I did as a guest.

I bet the last half of February will be very cold winter weather. We will be moving from Bryan, Ohio to Clear Lake on Feb. 22, so most likely the weather will be good for ice Sports, and not for moving. For all you ice fishermen and Ice boaters, it is the lea
